CineForm (MOV)

GoPro's wavelet-based intermediate codec. A high-quality post-house delivery option with a real advantage: genuine 12-bit alpha support.

Encoding

Three modes (no Log — not currently wired through the Production Reference Analyzer for this format):

  • Display (Rec.709) — default, standard delivery.
  • Display (sRGB) — matches the viewer; review copies.
  • Scene Linear — no curve; pick CineForm 444 Alpha alongside this for VFX handoff work.

Profile

  • CineForm 422 — 10-bit, 4:2:2, no alpha. Default — the editorial/general-delivery workhorse for this format.
  • CineForm 444 — 12-bit, full 4:4:4, no alpha. Highest non-alpha quality.
  • CineForm 444 Alpha — 12-bit, 4:4:4:4 with real alpha support — this format's headline feature.

Quality

A compression-strength dial (film3+ down to low). film3+ (default) is the highest quality/largest files, matching this format's "post-house high" positioning — lower settings trade quality for smaller files.

Include Alpha Channel

Only meaningful on the 444 Alpha profile.

Alpha Type

  • Premultiplied — default. RGB is pre-scaled by alpha before writing, matching the convention Nuke, Resolve/Fusion, and Flame assume by default for a generic RGBA file.
  • Straight — RGB keeps its full value regardless of alpha. Use this only if the alpha channel is meant purely as garbage/holdout- matte data for a downstream keyer or mask input, not a displayable beauty-with-alpha image.

See Alpha Channels for the full explanation.
